The flappet lark (Mirafra rufocinnamomea) is a small bird found across much of Sub-Saharan Africa. It belongs to the lark family. This bird gets its name from a special sound it makes. During its breeding season, it flaps its wings in a unique way that creates a "flapping" noise.
About the Flappet Lark's Family
The flappet lark is part of a group of birds that are closely related. Scientists call this a "superspecies." This group includes the Cape clapper lark and the Eastern clapper lark. Sometimes, the flappet lark is also called the "cinnamon bush lark." However, another bird, Horsfield's bush lark, also shares this name.
Different Types of Flappet Larks
There are many different types, or subspecies, of the flappet lark. Scientists have identified fifteen of these. Each subspecies might have slight differences in where it lives or how it looks. These different types are found all over Africa. For example, M. r. buckleyi lives in West Africa, while M. r. fischeri can be found in places like Angola and Tanzania.
Where Flappet Larks Live
The flappet lark lives in a very large area across the African continent. Its natural homes are dry savannahs, which are grasslands with scattered trees. They also live in moist savannahs and dry lowland grasslands in tropical or subtropical regions. These birds need open spaces to thrive.
