Flat Branch is a small stream in Columbia, Missouri. It was very important to the early settlers of Columbia. This stream was the main water source for the town of Columbia and an even older settlement called Smithton.

Flat Branch is a smaller part of Hinkson Creek. It starts northwest of Downtown Columbia. A popular green space called Flat Branch Park is located along the creek, between 4th Street and Providence Road. The stream was named "Flat Branch" because its banks are not very high.

A Look Back: Flat Branch History

When American pioneers first settled in this area in 1818, the Flat Branch area was covered in thick forests. One of the first settlers, Richard Gentry, built his cabin close to the creek. This was near where Garth and Walnut streets are today.

Early Life Along the Creek

In the early days, businesses called tanneries were set up along the creek's banks. Tanneries were places where animal hides were turned into leather. North of Broadway, a neighborhood with a rich history grew on both sides of the creek. This area was home to many African American families.

Music and Trails

A famous ragtime pianist named Blind Boone lived in Columbia. He was known for his amazing piano skills. Blind Boone even wrote a piece of music called “Strains from the Flat Branch.” It was inspired by the creek.

Later, the M.K.T. railroad built its tracks through the Flat Branch Valley. Trains used this path to enter Columbia. Today, the old train path has been turned into a popular walking and biking trail. It is called the M.K.T. Trail.

Modern Connections

The Flat Branch stream continues to be a part of Columbia's identity. A well-known local restaurant, Flat Branch Pub, is named after the creek. This shows how important the stream has been to the city's past and present.
