The Hakea ednieana, often called Flinders Range hakea or yandena, is a type of shrub or small tree. It's part of the Proteaceae plant family and grows naturally in the dry, central areas of Australia.

What Does the Flinders Range Hakea Look Like?

The Flinders Range hakea is usually a shrub or small tree with many stems. It can grow to be about 2 to 5 meters (6.5 to 16 feet) tall. Its bark is brown and has deep lines, and its smaller branches are covered in soft white hairs.

Leaves, Flowers, and Fruit

The leaves of this plant are shaped like needles. They are usually 2 to 7 centimeters (0.8 to 2.8 inches) long and very thin, about 0.7 to 1.8 millimeters (0.03 to 0.07 inches) wide. These leaves also have short, soft white hairs.

The plant produces many flowers, usually between 35 and 100, which are creamy white. They grow on a stalk that is 20 to 75 millimeters (0.8 to 3 inches) long and covered in soft white hairs. The flowers bloom from September to December.

After the flowers, the plant grows reddish-brown, woody fruits. These fruits are 2 to 3.4 centimeters (0.8 to 1.3 inches) long and 7 to 11 millimeters (0.28 to 0.43 inches) wide. They often grow in clusters and have a long, pointed end. Inside the fruit are seeds that are 19 to 26 millimeters (0.75 to 1.02 inches) long and 6 to 10 millimeters (0.24 to 0.39 inches) wide, with a small wing on one side.

How the Flinders Range Hakea Got Its Name

The Hakea ednieana was first officially described by a scientist named Ralph Tate in 1885. He wrote about it in a publication called Transactions, proceedings and report, Royal Society of South Australia.

The second part of its scientific name, ednieana, was chosen to honor John Ednie Brown. He used to be in charge of forests in South Australia.

Where Does the Flinders Range Hakea Grow?

The Flinders Range hakea is a plant that is endemic to certain areas. This means it only grows naturally in those specific places. You can find it in western New South Wales and in the Flinders Ranges and Far North regions of South Australia.

This plant often grows on or near rocky cliffs and along water paths. It prefers stony or sandy soils. While it is quite common in South Australia, it is much rarer to find in New South Wales.
