Flora Jane Duffy, born on September 30, 1987, is an amazing triathlete from Bermuda. She is known for winning a gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. This was a huge moment for Bermuda, as it was their very first Olympic gold medal! Flora has also competed in many other Olympic Games, including Beijing, London, and Rio de Janeiro. She also won gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and 2022.

Flora Duffy's Athletic Career
Flora Duffy is a highly successful triathlete. She has won many world championships. These include the 2016 and 2017 ITU World Triathlon Series World Champion titles. She was also the ITU Cross Triathlon World Champion in 2015 and 2016. On top of that, she has won the XTERRA World Championships six times!
Olympic Games Achievements
Flora has proudly represented Bermuda in four Olympic Games. She competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She also went to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Then came the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Her biggest Olympic success was at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. There, she won a gold medal! This was not only Flora's first Olympic medal, but it was also Bermuda's first-ever gold medal. This made Bermuda the smallest country to win a gold medal at the Summer Olympics. Flora also competed in the women's triathlon at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Commonwealth Games Success
In April 2018, Flora Duffy won the first gold medal of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. This event took place in Gold Coast, Australia. She won the women's sprint triathlon by a large lead of 43 seconds. This made her Bermuda's first female Commonwealth gold medalist. She also won another gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Unique Triathlon Records
Flora Duffy holds some amazing records in triathlon. In 2016, she became the only person to win three triathlon world titles in the same year. She won the WTS, ITU Cross Triathlon, and Xterra titles. She is also the only triathlete in WTS history to have the fastest swim, bike, and run times in the same race. Flora also holds the record for the biggest winning margin in both Olympic and Sprint distance races in a WTS event.
On November 25, 2022, Flora was crowned the ITU Triathlon World Champion. This happened in Abu Dhabi, where she beat Georgia Taylor-Brown.
Awards and Recognition
For her great contributions to sport in Bermuda, Flora Duffy has received special honors. In 2018, she was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Then, in 2022, she was given the even higher honor of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE).
Flora Duffy's Legacy
The Dame Flora Duffy National Sports Centre is named after her. This center is in Devonshire Parish and includes the Flora Duffy South Field Stadium. It's a way to honor her achievements and inspire future athletes.
About Flora Duffy's Life
Flora Duffy grew up in Bermuda. She went to Warwick Academy there. Later, she studied abroad at Kelly College in England. She also attended the University of Colorado Boulder in the United States. She earned a degree in Sociology from the university.
The Flora Fund
After winning a race in Bermuda in April 2018, Flora started "The Flora Fund." Through this fund, she wants to help young people in Bermuda. Her goal is to help them reach their full potential. She hopes this will create a healthier and more ambitious community.
Personal Life
In December 2017, Flora Duffy married South African triathlete Dan Hugo. They got married in Stellenbosch, which is Dan's hometown. When they are not training in Boulder, Colorado, they live in Stellenbosch. Flora has a fun dream: she hopes to travel to space one day!
