Flora Macdonald Reid (born 1860, died 1938) was a talented British and Scottish painter. She was also the sister of two other artists, John Robertson Reid and Elizabeth Reid.

About Flora's Life

Flora Macdonald Reid was born in London in 1860. Her parents were from Scotland. Later, her family moved to Edinburgh, a big city in Scotland.

Flora studied art at the Trustees School of Art. Her brother John, who was also an artist, helped teach her too. In 1881, Flora and her brothers and sisters moved back to London. They lived in the Haverstock Hill part of the city. Later in her life, Flora lived in Cornwall for ten years. This is a beautiful area in England, and she lived in towns called Looe and Polperro.

Flora started showing her artwork when she was very young. At just sixteen, she displayed her paintings at the Royal Scottish Academy. By the time she was nineteen, her art was shown at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. When she was twenty, her paintings were even shown at the famous Royal Academy in London.

In 1900, some of her paintings shown at the Royal Academy included The Miller's Frau, A Wonderful Tale, and A Man Convinced Against His Will, is of the Same Opinion Still.

One of her famous paintings, Faith, was later called A Bruges Market Place. This painting was so well-known that it was included in a book about women painters in 1905.

In 2016, another of Flora's paintings, Fieldworkers (painted in 1883), was part of a special art show. This show was called Modern Scottish Women: Painters and Sculptors 1885-1965 and was held at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

Gaining International Fame

Flora Macdonald Reid traveled a lot. She lived in countries like Norway, France, and Belgium. Her talent was recognized around the world!

In 1900, she won a gold medal at a very important event in Paris, France. It was called the Exposition Universelle (1900), which was a huge world's fair.

Flora also showed her art at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, USA. Her paintings were displayed in the beautiful Palace of Fine Arts there.

Between 1895 and 1932, Flora exhibited her work six times at the Parisian Salon de Société des Artistes Français in Paris. She also frequently showed her art at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1877 to 1922. Almost every year between 1880 and 1938, her paintings were displayed at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts.
