Flora Philip (born May 19, 1865, died August 14, 1943) was a smart Scottish mathematician. She made history by being one of the first women to get a degree from the University of Edinburgh. She was also the very first female member of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society.

Early Life

Flora Philip was born on May 19, 1865. Her hometown was Tobermory, Mull in Scotland. Her father, William Phillip, was a civil engineer. Her mother was Isabella McDougall.

Her Education Journey

Flora went to school at Tain Academy. In 1883, she moved to Edinburgh to continue her studies. Back then, women were not allowed to study at Scottish universities. So, Flora joined the Edinburgh Association for the University Education of Women.

In 1885, she earned a special Certificate in Arts. This was given to her by Sir William Muir, the University Principal. She studied English literature, ethics, mathematics, and physiology.

Breaking Barriers at University

Things changed in 1889 when a new law was passed. The Universities (Scotland) Act finally allowed women to attend Scottish universities. Flora then officially enrolled at the University of Edinburgh. She received her degree for all her hard work.

On April 13, 1893, Flora and seven other women graduated. They were the first women ever to graduate from the University of Edinburgh! People were very excited to see this historic event. A report said many people came to watch the "spectacle" of ladies becoming graduates.

After graduating, Flora trained to be a teacher. She taught at the St George's High School for Girls in Edinburgh. She taught there until she got married in 1893.

First Woman in the Edinburgh Mathematical Society

In December 1886, Flora Philip became the first female member of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society. This was a big deal because she didn't even have a formal university degree yet! She was the only woman in the society. When she got married in 1893, she ended her membership.

A Special Anniversary

In 1943, the University of Edinburgh celebrated a big milestone. It was 50 years since the first group of women had graduated. Flora Philip was one of three original graduates who attended the ceremony. They were honored guests on the platform. Flora passed away later that same year.

Her Family Life

Flora married a lawyer named George Stewart in 1893. They had four children together. She died in 1943 at the age of 78. Flora Philip is buried in Dean Cemetery in Edinburgh.
