Florence Court Forest Park facts for kids
Florence Court Forest Park is a beautiful forest in Northern Ireland. It's a great place to explore nature and learn about history. This park is a wonderful spot for families and young adventurers to discover the outdoors.
Where is This Amazing Park?
This large forest covers about 1,200 hectares, which is like 3,000 football fields! It's located on the side of a mountain called Cuilcagh. Right next to the forest, you'll find the famous Florence Court House, which is looked after by the National Trust.
A Peek into the Past: The Story of Florence Court
The name Florence Court comes from the wife of Sir John Cole. He built the very first house here in the early 1700s. Later, his son John, who became the first Lord Mount Florence, is thought to have built the main house we see today. It has amazing views of Benaughlin Mountain.
Around 1770, more parts were added to the house. These were done by William Cole, 1st Earl of Enniskillen.
The Fire and the Rescue
In 1955, a big fire hit the main building. But quick-thinking rescuers saved a very special part of the house. They drilled holes in the floor to protect the dining room ceiling. This ceiling had beautiful decorations of cherubs (little angels) and birds. Thanks to their efforts, this amazing artwork was saved! The rest of the house and its plasterwork have been carefully fixed and restored.
