Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Floyd is a small, quiet place located in Ray County, in the state of Missouri, USA. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of the larger county. Floyd is also considered part of the big Kansas City metropolitan area, which is a busy region with many cities and towns.

Where is Floyd Located?

This community is found in the southwest part of Ray County. You can find it about 1.5 miles south of another community called Orrick, right along Missouri Route Z. If you look nearby, you'll see Keeney Creek flowing about half a mile to the northwest. The mighty Missouri River is also close, just two miles to the southwest.

The Story Behind Floyd's Name

Floyd wasn't always called Floyd! When it was first planned out and mapped in 1888, it had a different name: "Alfred." Later, the community's name was changed to Floyd. This new name was chosen to honor a person named Mr. Floyd, who was an important official working for the railroad at that time.
