Folkal Point was a folk and folk rock band from Bristol, England. They were active in the early 1970s. The band started in 1971. Their first album, also called Folkal Point, came out in 1972. It was released by a British company called Midas Recordings.

Their name, Folkal Point, is a clever play on words. It mixes 'folk' music with the idea of a 'focal point' in science, like where light comes together. The band's lead singer, Cherie Musialik, was seen as the main 'focal point' of the group. Another band member, Stuart Amesbury, described their sound as 'psych-folk'.

The Band's Story

Starting in the 1970s

Folkal Point formed in 1971 in the Bristol area. They played folk and folk rock music, especially English folk songs. The band had four members, all of whom were teenagers at the time:

  • Cherie Musialik (lead singer)
  • Stuart Amesbury (rhythm guitar and backing vocals)
  • Mark Steed (lead guitar)
  • Paul Cook (lead and rhythm guitar)

Their first album, Folkal Point, was released in 1972. It featured songs by famous artists like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. It also included traditional English folk songs. The album mixed old English folk music with newer American and Canadian folk styles.

Even though their first album didn't sell many copies (only 500!), it became very special over time. After about 40 years, it became one of the most wanted British folk albums ever! The band also performed regularly for BBC Radio Bristol during the early 1970s.

Some traditional English folk songs they covered on their album included "Lovely Joan" and "Scarborough Fair". In 2015, their album was updated and can now be found on Spotify.

Later Years and Reunion

In the early 2000s, members of Folkal Point worked with famous British folk guitarists Bert Jansch and John Renbourn. They helped with acoustic music shows in Bristol.

The band got back together in June 2019. They performed at the Clifton International Festival of Music in Bristol.
