Folsom Peak is a mountain peak located in the Washburn Range within Yellowstone National Park. This peak stands tall at about 9,334 feet (2,845 meters) above sea level. It is found in Park County, Wyoming, a state known for its beautiful natural landscapes.

The mountain was officially named in 1895. A geologist named Arnold Hague gave it the name Folsom Peak. He did this to honor David E. Folsom, an important explorer.

Who Was David E. Folsom?

David E. Folsom was a key member of the Cook–Folsom–Peterson Expedition in 1869. This group played a big role in exploring the Yellowstone area. Before this expedition, much of the Yellowstone region was unknown to many people.

The Cook-Folsom-Peterson Expedition

The Cook-Folsom-Peterson Expedition was one of the first groups to explore Yellowstone. They traveled through the area and wrote down what they saw. Their detailed reports helped others learn about Yellowstone's amazing features.

  • David E. Folsom: He was a farmer and explorer.
  • Charles W. Cook: He was a gold prospector and explorer.
  • William Peterson: He was also a gold prospector.

These three men were among the first to publish their findings about Yellowstone. Their work helped to show how special this area was. It also helped lead to Yellowstone becoming the world's first national park.

What Makes Yellowstone Special?

Yellowstone is a very unique place. It sits on top of a supervolcano, which causes its famous geothermal features. These include:

  • Old Faithful: A geyser that erupts regularly.
  • Grand Prismatic Spring: A large, colorful hot spring.
  • Mammoth Hot Springs: Terraces formed by hot water.

The park is also home to many animals. You can see bison, elk, bears, and wolves living freely. Exploring mountains like Folsom Peak helps us understand the vastness of this incredible park.
