What Does "Fonni" Mean?
The name "Fonni" or "Fonne" probably comes from an old Latin word, fons. This word means "fountain" or "god of the sources." This makes a lot of sense because the town has many natural spring water fountains.

Fonni's Culture and Traditions
The people of Fonni have very colorful traditional costumes. You can see them best during the festival for St. John the Baptist, who is the town's patron saint. This special day is on June 24th.
The men's costume is similar to what's worn in other parts of the region. It includes long linen trousers and black gaiters (which are like coverings for the lower leg).
The women's costume is quite unique. They wear a white shirt, with a small vest over it. On top of that is a red jacket with blue and black velvet trim. Their skirt is brown on top and red on the bottom, with a blue band in between. It's also accordion-pleated, which means it has many small folds. Sometimes, women wear two identical skirts, one over the other! Unmarried girls wear white headscarves, while married women wear black ones.
Exploring Fonni's Neighborhoods
The neighborhoods in Fonni are called "Rioni." The oldest part of town is called su piggiu, which means "the peak." This name probably comes from the fact that it's the highest and first part of the village to be built. Other neighborhoods include puppuai and cresiedda to the south, and logotza to the east.
Important Churches
Fonni is home to the Sanctuary of the Vergine dei Martiri, Fonni. This is an important religious building in the town.
