Fontarón is a small parish located in the Becerreá area of Galicia, Spain. A parish is like a small district or community, often centered around a church.
In 2014, Fontarón was home to 51 people. This was a bit less than in 2004, when 64 people lived there, and even fewer than in 1999. Back in the mid-1800s, Fontarón was much bigger, with about 219 residents. Today, the parish covers an area of about 11.66 square kilometers (around 4.5 square miles).
Fun Stories and Legends
The main church in Fontarón is dedicated to the Holy Spirit. There's a cool legend about how the church was built! People say that when the church was finished, a sculpture of a dove, which you can still see near the entrance, kept flying back to its old home. Its old home was a small, ancient chapel that doesn't exist anymore.
The only way the dove statue would stay in the new church was if the old chapel was taken down. The story also mentions a saint's statue from the old chapel that did the same thing. To make that saint's statue stay, the priest supposedly said that people needed to offer money to the statue.
Famous People from Fontarón
- Enriqueta Otero Blanco (1910-1989) was an important person from Fontarón. She was a teacher and a Galician activist who worked for social change.
