History of the Church Building
The building we now know as Foothills Baptist Church was built in 1855. It was first used by St. John's Episcopal Church. The design for the church came from a book. This book was called Rural Architecture. It was written by the architect Richard Upjohn.
In 1880, St. John's Church moved to a new building. They sold the old chapel. A new group called the Union Church at Boquet Chapel bought it. This group included both Presbyterians and Baptists. They used the church until 1922.
The church building was closed for many years. Then, in 1949, it reopened. It became the Church of the Nazarene. Finally, in 2005, it was dedicated as the Foothills Baptist Church. The church is located west of Essex on New York State Route 22.
