The Ford Country Squire was a popular station wagon made by the Ford Motor Company. It first came out in 1950. This car started as a "woodie," which means it had real wood as part of its body. But by 1952, the Country Squire wasn't a true woodie anymore. Instead, it was made of steel but still had wood-like panels on the outside. This gave it a classic, unique look.

The Squire Name Through the Years

From the 1960s to the early 1980s, Ford used the "Squire" name on many of its cars that had the wood-grain look. These included different models like the LTD II, Falcon, Escort, and the mid-sized LTD. This showed how popular the wood-paneled style was for Ford's station wagons.

Why the Country Squire Changed

During the mid-1980s, fewer people were buying large station wagons. This was because new types of family vehicles, like minivans, became popular. Minivans such as the Chrysler minivans and the Ford Aerostar offered more space and easier access.

At Ford, the job of carrying many passengers (up to 8 people) shifted to newer cars. By 1992, the Mercury Sable and Ford Taurus station wagons took over the role that the Country Squire used to fill.
