Village History
How Forest Hills Got Its Name
The area we now call Forest Hills was named after a large home from the late 1800s. This home belonged to David D. Davies. He bought a very big piece of land, about 2,000 acres, in 1855. A large part of what is now Forest Hills was once part of his property.
The Forest Hill Mansion
The main house, called Forest Hill, was a grand Victorian mansion. It was built to have an amazing view of the Cullowhee Valley. Later, this land became known as the Cox Farm, named after a different owner. The beautiful Forest Hill mansion was taken down in the 1980s. This happened around the time that builders started creating new homes for the neighborhood that would become Forest Hills.
Past and Present Features
In the past, a large part of the village was home to the Forest Hills Country Club. This club had a golf course. Today, much of this land is empty or not used. A motor lodge, which is like a small hotel, was built near the middle of the old golf course. This lodge also offers some apartments for students to rent.
