Forest Oaks is located in the southeastern part of Guilford County. It's about 10 miles (16 km) southeast of downtown Greensboro.

A well-known spot in Forest Oaks is the Forest Oaks Country Club. The community is also home to Southeast Guilford Middle and High Schools. A major road, Joseph M. Hunt Highway (U.S. Route 421), runs along its western side.
