The Forest of Mercia is a special green area in England. It's like a younger sibling to the much older Forest of Arden. This area was once part of the ancient Kingdom of Mercia.

The Forest of Mercia is one of twelve "community forests" in England. These forests are built near big towns and cities. It covers about 92 square miles (23,000 hectares). You can find it mostly around the town of Cannock in South Staffordshire.

What are Community Forests?

Community forests are part of a big plan to make the environment better. This plan started in 1990. The Countryside Commission helped set it up.

These forests are run by local groups working together. These groups include local people, town councils, and important organizations like Natural England and the Forestry Commission.

Why were they created?

Community forests were made for several important reasons:

  • To help local communities grow and improve.
  • To plant new trees and make old woodlands fresh again.
  • To make green spaces nicer for everyone.
  • To build new paths for walking and cycling.

Who manages the Forest of Mercia?

Many groups work together to manage the Forest of Mercia. These include:

  • Lichfield District Council
  • South Staffordshire Council
  • Staffordshire County Council
  • Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council

The forest is managed from a special building. It's called the Innovation Centre. You can find it at Chasewater, near Burntwood.
