Formentera is a special name for wines made on the beautiful island of Formentera in Spain. This island is part of the Balearic Islands, which are located in the Mediterranean Sea. The wines from Formentera have a special label called Vino de la Tierra.
Vino de la Tierra means "wine of the land." It's like a special badge that shows where the wine comes from and that it follows certain rules. In Spain, this label is one step below the highest quality label, which is called Denominación de Origen.

Where Formentera Wine Comes From
The Vino de la Tierra label covers all the wines made across the entire island of Formentera. Imagine the whole island being one big wine-making area!
Today, there are about 10 hectares of vineyards on Formentera. A hectare is a measure of land, roughly the size of a large sports field. So, there are about 10 "sports fields" of grapevines. There are also two wineries, called bodegas, that are officially registered. A group called the Regulatory Council (Consejo Regulador) makes sure all the wines follow the rules to get the Vino de la Tierra label.
When Formentera Wine Got Its Special Label
Formentera wines officially received their Vino de la Tierra status in 2004. This means that from that year on, wines made on the island could use this special quality label.
