Fort Covington includes the main village area and a lot of countryside around it. This CDP covers about half of the larger area called the Town of Fort Covington. In 2020, about 1,127 people lived in the Fort Covington CDP.

Where is Fort Covington?

The Fort Covington CDP is located in the northern part of the Town of Fort Covington. The main village area sits right along the Salmon River. This river is just south of the border between the United States and Canada.

The total area of the CDP is about 50 square kilometers (19.36 square miles). Most of this area is land, with a very small amount of water.

Travel and Nearby Places

New York State Route 37 is a main road that goes through Fort Covington. If you travel southeast on this road for about 15 miles, you will reach Malone. Malone is the main town for Franklin County.

If you go west on Route 37 for about 21 miles, you will get to Massena. You can also reach Cornwall, Ontario, in Canada, by taking Route 37 and crossing the St. Lawrence River on the Three Nations Crossing. Cornwall is about 16 miles northwest of Fort Covington.

Border Crossing

The northern edge of Fort Covington is the international border with Canada. There is a special place called the Fort Covington–Dundee Border Crossing. This crossing connects Dundee Road in Fort Covington to Quebec Route 132 in Canada.

Quebec Route 132 goes northeast along the St. Lawrence River. It leads to places like Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, which is about 32 miles away. The big city of Montreal in Canada is about 70 miles northeast of Fort Covington.
