Fort Dette, also known as Star Fort, was a special kind of fort built a long time ago in Rolla, Missouri. It looked like a big plus sign (+) from above. This fort was named after Captain John F. W. Dette, who helped build most of it. It was designed to protect Rolla, especially from the east.

What Was Fort Dette Like?

Fort Dette was a unique fort with two levels, like a double-decker building. It was shaped like a Greek Cross, which means it looked like a big plus sign (+). This design helped its defenders see in many directions. It was built like a blockhouse, which is a strong, small fort.

How Was It Built?

The fort was very long, about 140 feet across each arm. It had strong log and timber walls that supported the upper level. These walls had small openings called loopholes. Riflemen could shoot through these holes while staying safe inside.

Cannons and Protection

Fort Dette was built to hold cannons on both levels. The bottom level had a smaller cannon. The top level held a much larger cannon, perhaps a 24- or 32-pounder. This means it fired very heavy cannonballs.

To keep the fort safe, it was surrounded by a ditch or moat. This ditch was 8 feet wide and 4 feet deep, making it hard for enemies to get close.

Hidden Powder and Lookout Spot

A special room for gunpowder was buried safely underground. This "powder magazine" was 20 feet square. Keeping the gunpowder underground protected it from attacks.

Right in the middle of the top level, there was a small guard house. This spot also served as an observation platform. Soldiers could stand there to watch for any danger from far away.

Where Was Fort Dette Located?

Fort Dette was built in East Rolla, Missouri. Its main job was to guard the eastern entrance to the town. This was an important spot during the American Civil War.

Today, the land where Fort Dette once stood is part of the campus of the Missouri University of Science and Technology. This university was once known as the University of Missouri at Rolla.

What Happened to Fort Dette?

Fort Dette no longer exists. It was a temporary structure built for a specific time. Over the years, it was taken down or fell apart. Today, you won't see the fort itself, but its history is still remembered.
