Fort Duquesne was an old French trading post. It was built around 1750 and was used for trading furs. This historic site was found in 1983. Just one year later, on November 15, 1984, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important historical places in the United States.

The fort is located about two miles north of Little Falls, Minnesota. It sits on the west side of the famous Mississippi River. Since 2004, the land where Fort Duquesne once stood is part of the Charles A. Lindbergh State Park. This happened because the Minnesota Legislature passed a special law.

What Was Fort Duquesne Like?

Fort Duquesne was not a very large fort. It measured about 75 feet by 150 feet. Inside, there were likely three to five buildings. These buildings were probably used for living, storing goods, and trading.

The fort was also described as having strong wooden walls. These walls were about 13 feet tall. They would have helped protect the people and goods inside.

How Long Was the Fort Used?

Fort Duquesne was only used for a short time. It was active for just one or two years. After this short period, the fort was destroyed by a fire. This fire likely ended its use as a trading post.

What Was Found at the Site?

When archaeologists explored the site, they found several interesting items. These discoveries help us learn about life at the fort. They found hand-painted bowls, which might have been used for eating or trading.

They also discovered glass beads. Beads were often used as money or gifts in trade with Native American groups. Another important find was gunflints. These small pieces of flint were essential for firing old muskets and rifles.

Why Was Fort Duquesne Important?

Fort Duquesne was a small but important part of early Minnesota history. It shows how the French were exploring and trading in this area. It also highlights the fur trade, which was a big business back then.

Finding the fort helped historians understand more about the past. It gives us clues about how people lived and interacted centuries ago. Being on the National Register of Historic Places means it's protected for future generations.
