Fort James was a military fort built in South Dakota in 1865. It was used by cavalry soldiers to help keep the peace and protect settlers during the expansion of the United States.

Building Fort James
Fort James was built in 1865. It was located in Hanson County, South Dakota. The fort was placed in a good spot right next to the James River. It was also near where the James River meets a smaller stream called Shell Creek.
Why Fort James Was Special
Fort James was unique for its time. It was the only fort built with stone during the period when the United States was expanding westward. Most other forts were made from wood.
Short History of Fort James
Fort James did not stay active for very long. The soldiers left the fort in 1867, just two years after it was built. There are stories that the fort was partly burned down a couple of years after it was left empty.

Fort James was featured on a TV show! It was part of an episode of a PBS archaeology series called Time Team America. This show explores old historical sites to learn more about the past.
