The Fortaleza del Cerro, also known as Fortaleza General Artigas, is a historic fortress located in Montevideo, Uruguay. It stands proudly on a hill overlooking the beautiful Bay of Montevideo. This fortress is part of the Casabó neighborhood, west of Villa del Cerro.

It sits on the highest hill in the Montevideo area, often called Cerro de Montevideo. This hill is 134 meters (about 440 feet) above sea level, giving the fortress a perfect view across the bay. Its main job was to protect the people of Montevideo and their port on the Río de la Plata. Construction began in 1809, ordered by Governor Francisco Javier de Elío, and finished in 1839. It was the very last Spanish fort built in Uruguay. Since 1916, it has been home to a Military Museum.

A Historic Landmark

The Fortaleza del Cerro is a very important place in Uruguay's history. It was declared a National Monument in 1931. This means it's a protected site because of its historical value.
