What Are These Forts?

Fort Randolph and Fort Buhlow were built during the Civil War. They were built to protect the city of Pineville. They also guarded the Red River. This river was a major waterway for moving supplies and soldiers. The forts were important for controlling this area.

The Story of Bailey's Dam

One of the most interesting parts of the site is the remains of Bailey's Dam. This dam was built in a hurry during the Civil War. It helped the Union Fleet escape a tricky situation.

How Bailey's Dam Saved the Fleet

In 1864, the Union Army was retreating after the Battle of Mansfield. Their ships, led by Admiral David Porter, were stuck. The Red River water levels were too low. The ships could not get past the rapids.

A clever engineer named Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Bailey came up with a plan. He suggested building a dam. This dam would raise the water level. It would allow the ships to float over the rapids. Thousands of soldiers worked day and night to build it. They used trees, rocks, and anything they could find.

The dam worked! The water rose, and the Union ships escaped. This was a huge success for the Union forces. It saved many ships and lives. The remains of this amazing dam can still be seen at the historic site today.
