The Fossar de les Moreres is a very important memorial square in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Its name means "Grave of the Mulberries." This special place is right next to the beautiful Santa Maria del Mar church.

The square was built over an old cemetery. Here, many brave people who defended Barcelona were buried. This happened after a big battle called the Siege of Barcelona in 1714. This battle was the final part of a long conflict known as the War of the Spanish Succession. Today, the Fossar de les Moreres has a special memorial. It features a torch with an eternal flame and a famous poem by Frederic Soler.

Understanding the History of Catalonia

What Happened After the War?

After the War of the Spanish Succession, Catalonia faced big changes. It lost many of its special rights and its ability to govern itself. The new king made some rules called the Decretos de Nueva Planta. These rules ended many old Catalan traditions and ways of doing things. These traditions had been in place for a very long time, even since the Crown of Aragon. Later on, people were not allowed to use the Catalan language for official documents. These new rules affected not only Catalonia but also other parts of Spain.

Why is the Fossar de les Moreres Important?

Because of this difficult history, the Fossar de les Moreres is a very meaningful place. Every year, people gather here to remember. This happens during the National Day of Catalonia, which is called Diada Nacional de Catalunya in Catalan.
