Foster is a small, quiet community located in Warren County, Indiana, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Foster is part of Mound Township.

History of Foster

Foster was officially started on April 25, 1893. The land for the community was given by an early settler named William R. Foster, who the place is named after.

In its early days, Foster was a busy little place. It had important services like:

  • a post office
  • a blacksmith shop (where metal items were made or repaired)
  • a railroad depot (a train station)
  • two stores
  • a stockyard (for farm animals)
  • a threshing machine (for separating grain)
  • a grain elevator (for storing grain)
  • a sawmill (for cutting wood)

The post office in Foster first opened in 1883. It served the community for many years before it closed down in 1905. Today, Foster is much smaller, with mostly homes and a few small businesses.

Foster is found just north of U.S. Route 136, a main road. It's about 5 miles (8 kilometers) west of a town called Covington. The community is also very close to the border between Indiana and Illinois, about 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) east of it.

A train track, originally part of the New York Central Railroad and now called the Vermilion Valley Railroad, runs right through Foster. Also, a small stream called the north fork of Spring Creek flows along the western side of the community.
