The Neuquén Foundational Pyramid (in Spanish: Monolito Fundacional de Neuquén) is a special monument in the city of Neuquén, Argentina. It was built to celebrate Neuquén becoming the new capital of the National Territory.

This pyramid was first opened in 1904, the same year the city was founded. It was originally located next to a building called "Chateau Gris." Later, in 1954, the pyramid was moved a short distance north to where it stands today. It is one of the first monuments built in the city and is an important historical symbol. You can even see it on Neuquén's coat of arms!

Building the Pyramid: A Look Back

The very first stone of the Neuquén Foundational Pyramid was placed on September 12, 1904. This date was chosen to celebrate Neuquén becoming the capital of the National Territory. Before this, Chos Malal had been the capital since 1887.

The pyramid was built using bricks and cement. Its construction was finished in October of the same year. This project was made possible by a national law, Law 4523, approved by the country's government leaders.

Where It First Stood

The pyramid was first placed next to the "Chateau Gris." This was a two-story wooden building designed in a Swiss style. It served as both the town hall and the main office for the National Territory's administration.

The monument stayed in its original spot until 1950. That's when the Chateau Gris building was taken down. In 1954, a new monument, the San Martín Monument, was put where the pyramid used to be.

So, the city government decided to move the pyramid a few meters north. It was placed in one of the squares on what is now Argentina Avenue. This area was part of the land where the Chateau Gris once stood. During the move, workers found a wooden box under the pyramid's original foundation. Inside were old, mostly unreadable historical papers from the National Territory government.

Why the Pyramid Is Important Today

The Neuquén Foundational Pyramid is located in Bouquet Roldán square, right in the city center. It remains one of Neuquén's most important historical monuments. As mentioned, it is even shown on the city's official coat of arms.

The pyramid is also used for special events, like the city's anniversary day. It is included in different tours for visitors. Because it is close to the San Martín Monument, which is a popular meeting point for locals, the pyramid often sees many people. This happens during protests, parades, and other community gatherings.
