Four Lakes (Idaho) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Four Lakes are a group of four small lakes found high up in the White Cloud Mountains in Idaho. These lakes are special because they were carved out by ancient glaciers long ago. They are also known as Paternoster lakes, which means they are connected in a chain, much like beads on a string, by a small stream.

You can find these beautiful lakes in Custer County, Idaho, within the amazing Sawtooth National Recreation Area. They are located in a wild, untouched area, high above Quiet Lake and to the east of Patterson Peak. Because they are so remote, there are no official trails that lead directly to the Four Lakes Basin, making them a true hidden gem for adventurers!

What Makes the Four Lakes Special?

The Four Lakes are a great example of how glaciers shaped our Earth. Thousands of years ago, huge sheets of ice moved through these mountains, slowly carving out the valleys and basins where the lakes now sit. When the glaciers melted, they left behind these beautiful, clear lakes.

The Paternoster Chain

Imagine a necklace with beads. That's a good way to think about Paternoster lakes! They are a series of lakes connected by a single stream or river. In the case of the Four Lakes, a small stream flows from one lake to the next, creating this unique chain. This is a common feature in areas that were once covered by glaciers.

Meet the Four Lakes

Each of the Four Lakes has its own name and unique features. They are all located at very high elevations, making them cold and clear. Let's take a closer look at each one.

Cornice Lake

Cornice Lake is one of the Four Lakes. It sits at an elevation of about 3,010 meters (9,875 feet) above sea level. This lake is about 187 meters (614 feet) long and 80 meters (262 feet) wide. Its high location offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Emerald Lake

Emerald Lake is another beautiful lake in the chain. It's located at an elevation of about 3,020 meters (9,908 feet). This lake is a bit larger than Cornice Lake, measuring about 214 meters (702 feet) long and 140 meters (459 feet) wide. Its name likely comes from the clear, green-blue color of its water.

Glacier Lake

Glacier Lake is the highest of the Four Lakes, sitting at an elevation of about 3,050 meters (10,007 feet). It is about 90 meters (295 feet) long and 75 meters (246 feet) wide. Being the highest, it's often surrounded by snow and ice for much of the year, even into the summer.

Rock Lake

Rock Lake is the final lake in this special group. It is located at an elevation of about 3,025 meters (9,925 feet). This lake is about 120 meters (394 feet) long and 69 meters (226 feet) wide. Like the other lakes, it is surrounded by rugged mountain terrain.

Exploring the Area

Because there are no official trails leading to the Four Lakes, reaching them requires advanced hiking and navigation skills. This means the area remains very wild and untouched, which is great for preserving its natural beauty and wildlife. It's a place where you can truly experience the wilderness of the White Cloud Mountains.
