The Four Winds Casinos are a group of places where people can play games for money, called casinos. They are found in the states of Indiana and Michigan in the United States. These casinos belong to the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, which is a Native American tribe.
The main casino is in New Buffalo Township, Michigan. There are also other locations in Hartford, Michigan; Dowagiac, Michigan; and South Bend, Indiana.
How Four Winds Casinos Started
In 2007, the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, as a recognized Native American tribe, built their first casino, Four Winds New Buffalo. This was on their own land, called the Pokagon Reservation, in New Buffalo Township. They were able to do this because of a law called the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act and an agreement with the state of Michigan.
Later, they opened more casinos:
- Four Winds Hartford opened on August 30, 2011.
- Four Winds Dowagiac opened on April 30, 2013.
The tribe had an agreement with Michigan that limited them to three casinos in that state. So, they decided to build another casino in South Bend, Indiana. This casino, Four Winds South Bend, opened on January 16, 2018.
