The Fourth Deputy Prime Minister is an important job in the Government of Spain. This person is also known as the Fourth Vice President of the Government (Spanish: Vicepresidencia Cuarta del Gobierno de España). It is not a job that always exists. The Prime Minister decides if there will be a Fourth Deputy Prime Minister. The Spanish Constitution allows for more than one Vice President.
History of the Fourth Deputy Prime Minister
This job was created recently, on January 13, 2020. Teresa Ribera was the first person to hold this position. She was also the minister for the environment at the time.
The Fourth Deputy Prime Minister does not have special powers on their own. Their main role is to be a member of the Council of Ministers. This position is set out in a law from 1997. It says that the main reason for this job is to step in for the Prime Minister. This happens if the Prime Minister is away, sick, or if the job is empty.
The Fourth Deputy Prime Minister only takes over if the first, second, and third deputies cannot do it.
This job was stopped on July 12, 2021. At that time, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez made Teresa Ribera the Third Deputy Prime Minister. The job was brought back on November 21, 2023. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez then appointed María Jesús Montero to this role.
