What is the Fourth Deputy Prime Minister?
This job was created on January 13, 2020. It's a newer role in the Spanish government. Teresa Ribera, who was the minister for the environment, was the first person to hold this position.
The Fourth Deputy Prime Minister doesn't have special powers on their own. Their main role is to be part of the Council of Ministers. This council helps the Prime Minister run the country.
When does the Fourth Deputy Prime Minister step in?
The main purpose of this job is to help out if the Prime Minister can't do their job. This might happen if the Prime Minister is away, sick, or if the position is empty.
However, the Fourth Deputy Prime Minister only steps in if the First, Second, and Third deputies are also unable to do so. It's like being a backup for the backups!
Changes to the role
The job was stopped on July 12, 2021. At that time, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez moved Teresa Ribera to become the Third Deputy Prime Minister.
But the role was brought back on November 21, 2023. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez then appointed María Jesús Montero to this position. The role was again stopped on December 29, 2023.
