Frösön facts for kids
Frösön (pronounced "FROO-sun") is the biggest island in Storsjön lake, located in Jämtland, Sweden. Part of the city Östersund is actually on the island. For a long time, Frösön was the main center of the Jämtland region. It's also home to the famous Frösö Runestone, which is the northernmost runestone in the world!
The Swedish composer Wilhelm Peterson-Berger loved Frösön. He had a summer house there and later lived there permanently from 1930. In 1896, he wrote some piano music called Frösöblomster (which means Flowers of Frösön). His opera Arnljot from 1910 even uses ideas from the Frösö Runestone.

Frösön's Past: A Look Back
Frösön gets its name from Freyr, a god from old Norse stories. The island is home to the "Frösö Runestone". This special stone is the northernmost runestone ever found in the world. It was made between 1030 and 1050 AD. Frösön used to be its own town, called a köping, until 1974. Then, it became part of the larger city of Östersund.
A Special Hospital on the Island
From 1915 to 1988, Frösön had a large hospital called Frösö sjukhus. This hospital was run by the government. It provided care for patients from all over Norrland, which is a big region in northern Sweden. Later, some of the ways the hospital cared for patients were questioned.
