The Fractured Heart is a special art piece. It's a sculpture that combines sound and light. It was created by a group called illuminart with the famous musician Gotye.
This amazing sculpture first appeared as a background for Gotye's live show. He performed his hit song Somebody That I Used to Know with Kimbra. This was at the 2011 ARIA Awards. The sculpture showed cool animations that matched the music.
After the ARIA Awards, illuminart made the Fractured Heart even better. It became a standalone interactive sculpture. It was shown at Vivid Sydney in 2012. Vivid Sydney is a festival of light, music, and ideas.
Gotye says the design comes from his father's artwork. It's based on a broken heart illustration. What makes it super cool is that you can interact with it! You use your body and hand movements. This lets you "remix" the sounds and light patterns. Gotye wanted everyone, even those who don't play music, to feel like a DJ. They can stand in front of it and mix the song's parts.
Today, this redesigned Fractured Heart is in Canberra. You can find it at the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA). Visitors can remix Gotye's songs Somebody That I Used to Know and State of The Art. You use your body to make sounds and light animations happen.
Fractured Heart: Public Launch
The Fractured Heart exhibit first opened quietly in December 2012. Then, on February 15, 2013, it had a big official opening. Gotye and the illuminart team were there at the NFSA. This event was free for everyone to attend.
Gotye talked about how the Fractured Heart was made. He even showed how to interact with the sculpture. A large crowd of fans watched him. After that, Gotye gave a talk in the Arc cinema. He shared his favorite animators and talked about his collaborations.
The day ended with an event called 'illuminart After Dark'. The courtyard of the NFSA was lit up. It featured more light and sound sculptures. These sculptures had been used by Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Australia. This group uses music to help people.
Who is illuminart?
illuminart is a creative group that specializes in projection art. They design and create amazing visual experiences. They combine different art forms, like light, sound, and storytelling. They worked closely with Gotye to bring the Fractured Heart to life.
Their projects are often very new and exciting. They mix light with interactive projections and performances. They work with many different artists and experts. illuminart uses a special technique called projection mapping. This means they project images onto 3D objects or buildings. The images fit the shape of the object perfectly. This makes the sculpture seem to change and move. It's like the projected image transforms the sculpture with light and illusions. This technique is also called "augmented sculpture."
