What's in a Name?

The lake's original name was Nidabun. This word meant "lip lake." It described the lake's unique shape. Later, French-Canadian people came to the area. They heard "Nidaa" and thought it sounded like "nedo." This word meant "whiteman" to them.

So, they started calling it Lac des Français. This means "Lake of the French." Over time, the name changed again. It became the name we use today: François Lake.
