The Nadina River is a cool river found in the beautiful British Columbia province of Canada. It flows into the western part of François Lake. This lake is located about 30 kilometers (or 18 miles) south of the town of Burns Lake. You can find it easily if you're traveling on Highway 35.
What's in a Name?
The Nadina River gets its name from Nadina Mountain. This mountain is close to where the river flows out. In the Carrier language, which is spoken by some Indigenous peoples in the area, "Nadina" means "standing up alone." It's a pretty fitting name for a mountain! The local Carrier people actually call the river "Nadinako," but that name wasn't officially chosen by the geographical names board.
A Look Back: The Old Nadina River Settlement
Did you know there used to be a small community named after the river? A settlement and a post office were once located at the west end of François Lake. This little community was also called Nadina River. However, it was abandoned in the 1960s. Today, you won't find it there anymore, but its name lives on through the river.
