Gabriel Auguste François Marty (born May 18, 1904 – died February 16, 1994) was an important French Catholic leader. He became a Cardinal and served as the Archbishop of Paris. He dedicated his life to the Church and played a key role in its activities.
Early Life and Priesthood
François Marty was born in a small town called Vaureilles in France. His family worked as farmers. His first name was Gabriel, but he used François to avoid confusion with another student.
He studied at the Seminary of Rodez and the Catholic Institute of Toulouse. He became a priest on June 28, 1930, in Rodez. For over 20 years, from 1930 to 1951, he worked as a pastor in the diocese of Rodez. After that, he became a vicar general for the diocese until 1952.
Becoming a Bishop and Archbishop
In 1952, Pope Pius XII chose him to be the bishop of Saint-Flour. This was a big step in his Church career.
Later, he became the Archbishop of Reims. He took part in the Second Vatican Council, which was a very important meeting for the Catholic Church. During this time, Church leaders discussed how to update the Church for modern times.
He was also chosen to lead the Episcopal Conference of France. This group helps guide the Catholic Church in France. He was its president from 1969 to 1975. In 1968, he became the Archbishop of Paris, which is a very important position in the French Church.
Life as a Cardinal
On April 28, 1969, Pope Paul VI made him a Cardinal. Cardinals are high-ranking officials in the Catholic Church. They often advise the Pope and can vote for a new Pope.
Cardinal Marty took part in the meetings to elect new Popes. He helped choose Pope John Paul I and Pope John Paul II.
He retired from his role as Archbishop of Paris on January 31, 1981. When he turned 80 in 1984, he no longer had the right to vote for a new Pope. He passed away on February 16, 1994, in a car and train accident.
