Françoise d'Alençon (born 1490 – died September 14, 1550) was an important noblewoman in French history. She was the eldest daughter of René of Alençon and Margaret of Lorraine.

Françoise was supposed to inherit lands and titles from her brother, Charles IV, Duke of Alençon. However, her sister-in-law, Marguerite of Angoulême, took control of these lands. Marguerite was also the sister of King Francis I of France.

Even though Françoise lost her inheritance, her family became very powerful. Her son, Antoine de Bourbon, later married Jeanne III, Queen of Navarre. Jeanne was the daughter of Marguerite of Angoulême and Henry II of Navarre. This marriage brought the families together.

Françoise's grandson, Henry de Bourbon, eventually became the King of France and Navarre. This shows how important Françoise's family line was to the future of France.

Françoise's Family Life

Françoise d'Alençon was married twice and had many children. Her marriages helped connect important noble families in France.

First Marriage: Duke of Longueville

In 1505, Françoise married Francis II, Duke of Longueville. They had two children together:

  • Jacques d'Orléans-Longueville (1511–1512)
  • Renée d'Orléans-Longueville (1508–1515)

Both of their children passed away when they were very young.

Second Marriage: Duke of Vendôme

On May 18, 1513, Françoise married for the second time to Charles de Bourbon, Duke of Vendôme. This marriage was very important for the future of the French royal family. They had 13 children:

  • Louis de Bourbon (1514–1516)
  • Marie de Bourbon (1515–1538)
  • Marguerite de Bourbon (1516–1589): She married Francis I of Cleves, Duke de Nevers.
  • Antoine de Bourbon, Duke of Vendôme (1518–1562): He married Jeanne III, Queen of Navarre. Their son, Henry, became King of France.
  • François de Bourbon, Count of Enghien (1519–1546)
  • Madeleine de Bourbon (1521–1561): She became an Abbess, a leader in a convent.
  • Louis de Bourbon (1522–1525)
  • Charles de Bourbon (1523–1590): He became an Archbishop and a Cardinal in the church.
  • Catherine de Bourbon (1525–1594): She also became an Abbess.
  • Renée de Bourbon (1527–1583): She became an Abbess at Chelles.
  • Jean de Bourbon, Count of Soissons and Enghien (1528–1557): He married his cousin, Marie, Duchess of Estouteville.
  • Louis de Bourbon, Prince of Condé (1530–1569): He married Eléonore de Roye. He was an important military leader.
  • Léonore de Bourbon (1532–1611): She became an Abbess at Fontevraud.
