Frances Rich (born Irene Frances Lither Deffenbaugh) was an American actress, artist, and sculptor. She was born on January 8, 1910, and passed away on October 14, 2007. Her mother was the famous actress Irene Rich. Frances became known for her acting roles and later for her beautiful sculptures.

Growing Up

Frances Rich was born in Spokane, Washington, USA, on January 8, 1910. Her mother was Irene Frances Luther Rich, a silent movie actress. Her father was Elvo Elcourt Deffenbaugh, a salesman. Later, her stepfather, Charles Rich, adopted her. Frances went to Smith College and graduated in 1931.

Her Career

Acting on Stage and Screen

Frances Rich started her acting career in movies. Her first film was Diamond Trail in 1933. She also appeared in Zoo in Budapest and Pilgrimage in the same year. Besides movies, Frances also acted on Broadway, which is a famous theater district in New York City. She performed in a play called Brief Moment from November 1931 to February 1932.

Becoming a Sculptor

After her acting career, Frances Rich became a talented sculptor. A sculptor is an artist who creates three-dimensional artworks, often by carving or molding materials. In 1933, she met a famous sculptor named Malvina Hoffman. Frances studied with Malvina in Paris, France, for two years.

When she came back to America, Frances worked hard at the Boston Museum School. She then opened her own art studio in New York City. From 1937 to 1940, she studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. There, she met another well-known sculptor, Carl Milles. Frances worked with Carl for 18 years, learning and creating art.

Famous Sculptures by Frances Rich

Frances Rich created many important sculptures. Some of her most famous works include:

  • Portrait busts (sculptures of a person's head and shoulders) at Smith College.
  • The Army-Navy Nurse Monument in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. This monument honors nurses who served in the military.
  • A bronze pelican sculpture in front of the Pelican Building at the University of California, Berkeley.
  • A marble bust of Alice Stone Blackwell for the Boston Public Library. This sculpture is part of the Boston Women's Heritage Trail.
  • Portrait busts of other famous people like Lotte Lehmann, Margaret Sanger, Diego Rivera, and Katharine Hepburn.

She also created large limestone carvings called bas reliefs. These were for the student union building at Purdue University in 1938.

Later Life and Passing

Frances Rich passed away in Payson, Arizona, on October 14, 2007. She was 97 years old. She left behind a legacy of beautiful art and a career that spanned both acting and sculpting.
