Literary Legacy

His Unique Poetic Style

Francesc Vicent Garcia wrote beautiful and clever poems, including sonnets and décima forms. He also wrote funny and sometimes harsh poems that made fun of things (called satire). Many Catalan writers in the 1700s copied his style. This trend was even called "vallfogonisme."

Published Works and Influence

Some of his poems were first published in 1703. Later, an edition from 1770 was not allowed by the Inquisition, a powerful religious court at the time. In 1988, some of his poems were included in a collection of 17th-century Catalan poetry. Garcia is widely seen as the first truly great Catalan writer. His works were very important and created a style of writing that lasted for a long time.

Interesting Rumors About Garcia

Stories and Friendships

Many stories were told about Vicent Garcia that were not true. One rumor said he visited Madrid in 1622 because King Philip IV asked him to. Another false belief was that he was good friends with the famous Spanish writer Lope de Vega. Perhaps the strangest story was that he was poisoned by people from Zaragoza. Despite these rumors, his talent as a writer was clear to everyone.

Garcia's Writing Style

Language and Themes

Garcia's poetry was similar to that of Spanish poets of his time, especially in its formal style and topics. However, his use of language was very special. He loved to use elegant words, and his writings often had a clever, playful tone (called irony). He also wrote about many different literary subjects. Because of this, people often compared his work to that of Quevedo, another famous writer.

A Playwright Too

Garcia was a very flexible poet, writing about many different things. He also wrote plays! One of his plays, called Comedy in Santa Barbara, was written for the opening of the Santa Barbara chapel in Vallfogona in 1617.
