Francesco Fontebasso (born October 4, 1707 – died May 31, 1769) was an Italian painter from Venice. He lived during the late Baroque and Rococo periods, which were styles of art known for their detailed and often dramatic or playful designs. Fontebasso first learned painting from Sebastiano Ricci. However, he was greatly inspired by another famous artist of his time, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.

A Painter's Journey

Francesco Fontebasso was a busy artist who traveled for his work. In 1761, he visited Saint Petersburg, a major city in Russia. There, he created beautiful ceiling paintings and other decorations for the grand Winter Palace. This shows how well-known and skilled he was, as he was asked to work in such an important building.

After his time in Russia, Fontebasso returned to his home city of Venice in 1768. He helped decorate a chapel in a church called San Francesco della Vigna. This was one of his last known projects.

His Art Today

Francesco Fontebasso passed away in Venice in 1769. Even though he lived a long time ago, his paintings are still admired today. You can find his artworks in various collections around the world. For example, some of his pieces are kept at the Kadriorg Palace in Tallinn, Estonia. This palace is part of the Art Museum of Estonia.

The famous Prado Museum in Spain also owns some of his art. They have a painting called The Bridegroom and the foolish Virgins, along with nine of his drawings. These works help us understand his unique style and talent.
