Francesco Marchisano (born June 25, 1929 – died July 27, 2014) was an Italian Cardinal. He worked for the Roman Curia, which is like the main government of the Catholic Church, from 1956 until he passed away.

Early Life and Church Career

Francesco Marchisano was born in Racconigi, Italy. He became a priest in 1952 in Turin. Cardinal Maurilio Fossati helped him become a priest.

He later studied in Rome. There, Cardinal Giuseppe Pizzardo offered him his first job in the Roman Curia. He worked his way up in a Vatican department. This department was for seminaries and universities. It is now called the Congregation for Catholic Education. He was its Undersecretary from 1969 to 1988. He also became a monsignor, which is a special title for a Catholic priest.

Becoming a Bishop and Cardinal

On October 6, 1988, Pope John Paul II made him a bishop. He was consecrated, or officially made a bishop, on January 6, 1989. Later, on July 9, 1994, he was made an archbishop.

He held many important roles, including:

  • President of the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archeology (1991–2004). This group looks after old Christian sites.
  • President of the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church (1993–2002). This group protects the Church's art and history.
  • President of the Artistic-Cultural Commission for the Grand Jubilee Year 2000. This was a special year for the Church.

On April 24, 2002, he took over several big jobs. He became the Archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica. This is the main church in the Vatican. He also became the Vicar General for Vatican City. This role is like a mayor for the Vatican City State. He also led the group that manages St. Peter's Basilica.

In 2003, he was made a Cardinal-Deacon. This happened at a special meeting called a consistory. He was given the title of Cardinal for the church of Santa Lucia del Gonfalone. He also led a group that cared for historical and artistic monuments of the Holy See.

Later Years and Papal Conclaves

Cardinal Marchisano was older than the usual retirement age in 2004. However, he continued to serve. In 2005, he became the President of the Labour Office of the Apostolic See. This office deals with workers' rights in the Vatican. He kept his other jobs too.

He was one of the cardinals who voted for a new Pope in 2005. This meeting is called a papal conclave. They chose Pope Benedict XVI. After the funeral of Pope John Paul II, Cardinal Marchisano shared a personal story. He said he was cured of a throat illness after the late Pope prayed for him.

In 2006, Pope Benedict named someone else to lead St. Peter's Basilica. In 2009, Cardinal Marchisano retired from his other roles.

He also took part in the conclave that elected Pope Francis in 2013. He was one of six cardinals who publicly promised to obey the new Pope. This happened at Pope Francis's inauguration ceremony. On June 12, 2014, Pope Francis promoted him to a Cardinal-Priest.

Cardinal Marchisano passed away in Rome on July 27, 2014. He was 85 years old. In 2018, Pope Francis gave the church title that Marchisano once held to Aquilino Bocos Merino.
