Francesco "Ciccio" Tavano (born 2 March 1979) is an Italian football coach and a former professional striker. A striker is a player whose main job is to score goals.

Playing Career

Early Football Days

Francesco Tavano started his professional football journey with the team Pisa. After that, he moved to a smaller team in Florence called Rondinella. This team was playing in a lower league called Serie C2.

Later, he joined Empoli, a team from Tuscany. At Empoli, he slowly became one of the most important players. He played for Empoli for several years, from 2001 to 2006.

Playing for Big Clubs

In January 2006, there were rumors that a very famous club, Real Madrid, was interested in Tavano. However, he ended up signing with Valencia in Spain in mid-2006. He was transferred for about €9 million.

In April 2006, Tavano was called to try out for the Italian national team. The team manager, Marcello Lippi, was picking players for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Even though Italy won the World Cup that year, Tavano did not get to play in an international match.

His time playing in Spain was not very successful. He did not get along well with the coaches. This meant he often sat on the bench as a substitute player.

Winning the Coppa Italia

After his time in Spain, Tavano returned to Italy. He joined Roma on a temporary deal called a loan. At Roma, he was mostly a reserve player. This meant he was a backup for the main strikers. However, he helped the club win the 2006–07 Coppa Italia in the 2006–07 season. The Coppa Italia is a major football cup competition in Italy.

Return to Livorno

In 2007, Livorno signed Tavano permanently. He joined the team for about €5.5 million on a four-year contract. He was given the number 10 jersey. This number was very special because it had been retired to honor a former Livorno star, Igor Protti. It was brought back just for Tavano.

Even though Tavano was the top scorer for Livorno in his first season back, his team was moved down to a lower league. This is called relegation. Despite this, Tavano decided to stay with Livorno. He wanted to help them get back into the top league, Serie A.

Top Scorer and Promotion

In the 2008–09 Serie B season, Tavano had an amazing start. He scored three goals in one game (a hat-trick) against Avellino on the very first day of the season. He also scored against Piacenza.

He missed a penalty kick against his old club, Empoli, when the score was tied. But he kept scoring goals. He scored in a big 5–2 win over Frosinone. He ended the season with 25 goals. This made him the capocannoniere, which means the top scorer in the league. His goals helped Livorno get promoted back to Serie A through the playoffs.

However, the next season in Serie A was tough for Livorno. They were the only newly promoted team to be relegated again. Tavano scored a winning goal against Roma, but he only scored four more goals that season.

Later Career and Retirement

After Livorno, Tavano continued to play for various Italian clubs. He played for Avellino in 2015–2016, then Prato in 2016–2017. From 2017 to 2020, he played for Carrarese. He returned to Prato for the 2020–2021 season.

He then played for Ponsacco in 2021–2022. In 2022, he started the season with a local team in Tuscany called Tuttocuoio. He retired from playing football in 2022 at the age of 43.

Coaching Career

First Coaching Role

On 15 November 2022, Francesco Tavano took on his first job as a head coach. He became the coach for Tuttocuoio, the same team he was playing for. This meant he had to stop his playing career to become a coach. He coached the team for almost a year. He was no longer the coach as of 14 November 2023.
