Francesco Tavano's Playing Career
Francesco Tavano began his professional football journey with the team Pisa. After that, he moved to a smaller team in Florence called Rondinella, which played in a lower league called Serie C2.
Playing for Empoli
Tavano then joined Empoli, a team from Tuscany, Italy. Here, he slowly became one of their most important players. In 2006, some football experts thought that big clubs like Real Madrid might want to sign him. However, he ended up signing with Valencia in Spain for about €9 million.
National Team and Time in Spain
In April 2006, Tavano was called up to try out for the Italian national team. The team manager, Marcello Lippi, was picking players for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, which Italy went on to win! Even though Tavano was called up, he never played in an official international match for Italy.
His time playing in Spain was not very successful. He had some disagreements with the coaches, which meant he often played as a substitute. After a short time in Spain, Tavano returned to Italy.
Loan to Roma and Coppa Italia Win
He joined Roma on a loan. A loan means he played for Roma for a short time before going back to his original club. At Roma, he was mostly a reserve player, meaning he was a backup for the team's main attackers. However, he helped Roma win the 2006–07 Coppa Italia in 2007. The Coppa Italia is a major cup competition in Italian football.
Returning to Livorno
In 2007, Livorno bought Tavano for about €5.5 million. He signed a four-year contract. He was given the number 10 jersey, which is a special number often given to the best attacking player. This number had been retired to honor a former Livorno star, Igor Protti, but it was brought back just for Tavano.
Even though Tavano was the best goal scorer for Livorno in his first season back, his team was moved down to a lower league. This is called relegation. Tavano decided to stay with Livorno for their 2008–09 Serie B season to help them get back to the top league.
Scoring Success and Promotion
He started the season by scoring three goals in one game (a hat-trick) against Avellino. This was the first hat-trick in the first round of the season since 1994! He scored 25 goals that season, making him the top scorer (called capocannoniere) in the league. His goals helped Livorno get promoted back to the top league through the playoffs. Playoffs are extra games played to decide which teams get promoted.
However, the next season in the top league was tough for Livorno, and they were moved down again. Tavano scored a winning goal against Roma, but only managed to score four more goals that season.
He stopped playing professional football in 2022. His last team was Tuttocuoio, where he played for a short time at 43 years old.
Francesco Tavano's Coaching Career
On 15 November 2022, Tavano started his first job as a head coach. He took charge of Tuttocuoio, the same team he was playing for. This meant he had to stop being a player. He coached the team for about a year before leaving on 14 November 2023.
