Francesco Torbido (born in Venice in 1486, died in 1562) was a talented Italian painter. He lived during the exciting Renaissance period. Francesco mostly worked in the cities of Verona and Venice. People also knew him by his nickname, il Moro.
About Francesco Torbido
Francesco Torbido began his art studies in Venice. He learned from a very famous artist named Giorgione. Later, Francesco moved to Verona. There, he married the daughter of a nobleman, Count Zenovello Giusti.
Through his marriage, Francesco also became a student of another painter, Liberale da Verona. Liberale da Verona liked Francesco so much that he treated him like his own son.
His Artworks
Francesco Torbido created many beautiful paintings. In Venice, he painted large wall artworks called frescoes. These frescoes showed scenes from the Life of the Virgin Mary and a picture called the Transfiguration.
In 1534, he painted for the main chapel of the Verona cathedral. He created curved artworks called lunettes. These showed the birth of Jesus (the Nativity) and the Virgin Mary going to heaven (the Assumption).
Another one of his paintings is Virgin and Child in Glory. You can see this artwork in the Church of St. Fermo. Francesco was also very good at painting people. He created many portraits, including two of himself. He also made art for the important Basilica di San Zeno.
