A Life in Politics

Francis Caulfeild became involved in politics at a young age. In 1798, he ran for a seat in the Irish Parliament. He represented County Armagh. He served there until 1799.

When his father passed away in 1799, Francis became the 2nd Earl of Charlemont. This was an important noble title. On December 12, 1806, he was chosen to be an Irish representative peer. This meant he could sit in the House of Lords in the British Parliament.

He received a special honor on October 19, 1831. He was made a Knight of the Order of St Patrick. This is a very respected Irish order of chivalry. In 1837, he was given another title: Baron Charlemont in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. This new title meant he and his future family members would automatically have a seat in the House of Lords.

From 1839, he served as the Lord Lieutenant of Tyrone. This was a high-ranking government position. He was also a member of the Privy Council of Ireland. This group advised the monarch on Irish affairs.

Family and Legacy

Francis Caulfeild married Anne Bermingham. She was the daughter of William Bermingham. They lived at Marino House in Clontarf, Dublin.

Sadly, all four of his children passed away before him. Because of this, when Francis Caulfeild died in 1863, his nephew, James Molyneux Caulfeild, inherited his titles and estates.
