James Molyneux Caulfeild, 3rd Earl of Charlemont (born October 6, 1820 – died January 12, 1892) was an important Irish politician and a nobleman, also known as a peer. He held several important roles in the government and society of his time.

Early Life and Education

James Molyneux Caulfeild was the son of Henry Caulfeild. His grandfather was the first Earl of Charlemont. James studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, a famous university in England.

Public Service and Political Career

James Molyneux Caulfeild began his public service early. In 1842, he was named High Sheriff of Armagh. A High Sheriff was a very old and important official in a county, responsible for law and order.

From 1847 to 1857, he served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for County Armagh. An MP is a person elected to represent their area in the country's main law-making body, the Parliament. He belonged to the Whig political party, which was one of the main political groups in Britain at the time.

Becoming an Earl and Further Roles

In 1863, James Molyneux Caulfeild became the 3rd Earl of Charlemont. This happened after his uncle Francis passed away. Being an Earl meant he held a high rank in the nobility.

He also served as a Lord Lieutenant of County Armagh from 1849 to 1864. A Lord Lieutenant was the King or Queen's personal representative in a county. Later, he became the Lord Lieutenant of County Tyrone from 1864 until his death in 1892. In 1865, he was made a Knight of St Patrick, which is a special honor given to people who have done great things for Ireland.

Family Life

Lord Charlemont was married two times.

  • His first marriage was to Elizabeth Jane Somerville in 1856.
  • His second marriage was to Anna Lucy Lambart in 1883 in France.

He did not have any children, so when he passed away, his title as Earl of Charlemont ended with him.

Final Years

James Molyneux Caulfeild died in Biarritz, France, in 1892. He was buried in St Patrick's Cathedral in Armagh, Ireland.
