Francis Delaram was an English artist who made pictures by engraving them onto metal plates. He was born around 1590 and was active as an artist between 1615 and 1624, or possibly 1627.

Delaram created many different types of engravings. These included portraits of people, pictures of landscapes, and illustrations for books. One famous book he illustrated was Historie by William Camden. Even though he made many artworks, we don't know much about his personal life.

Who Was Francis Delaram?

Some experts believe Francis Delaram was born in a region called Flanders. This area is known for its unique art style. Delaram's prints often show playful, musical angels, which is a common feature in Flemish art. This suggests he was strongly influenced by artists from Flanders.

His Artistic Style and Training

It's possible that Delaram learned his skills from another artist named Cornelis Boel. Boel was famous for illustrating the first edition of the King James Bible in 1611. This was a very important book.

Sometimes, Delaram might have had help with his work. For example, in his portrait of Charles I of England, the background doesn't look as well done as the main subject. This makes some people think another artist might have helped Delaram with those parts.

Capturing Personalities

Art experts Malcolm Charles Salaman and Aymer Vallance noticed something special about Delaram's male portraits. They said he had a great "grasp of character." This means he was very good at showing the personality of the men he drew. However, they felt his pictures of important women at court were not as strong.

Salaman believed that Delaram's portraits of people like Matthias de Lobel, George Wither, and Horace Vere were drawn while these people were actually sitting in front of him. This is called drawing "from life." It helps capture a person's true look and feeling.

Famous Faces He Engraved

Delaram also created portraits of famous figures like Elizabeth I of England. But these were not drawn from life. Instead, he made them by copying original paintings by another well-known artist, Nicholas Hilliard. Hilliard even gave Delaram permission to use one of his paintings for an engraving.
