Francis Henry French was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana. His birthday was September 27, 1857. His parents were Rufus M. French and Maria C. Rudisill. Later in life, he got married. He married Amelia Maud F. Wright on January 24, 1894. Their wedding took place in Detroit, Michigan.
Joining the Army
Francis Henry French decided to join the military. He was accepted into the United States Military Academy. This famous school is also known as West Point. He started his training there in 1875. He worked hard and graduated four years later, in 1879.
A Career in Service
After graduating, French began his military career. From 1879 to 1889, he served on the frontier. This period was during the American Indian Wars. He gained valuable experience during this time.
Throughout his long career, he served in many different infantry regiments. These included the 2nd, 11th, 12th, 16th, 21st, and 28th Infantry Regiments. He also commanded some of these units. His leadership skills were recognized. In September 1916, he was promoted to Brigadier General.
