Joining the Army

Francis Henry French decided to join the military. He was accepted into the United States Military Academy. This famous school is also known as West Point. He started his training there in 1875. He worked hard and graduated four years later, in 1879.

A Career in Service

After graduating, French began his military career. From 1879 to 1889, he served on the frontier. This period was during the American Indian Wars. He gained valuable experience during this time.

Throughout his long career, he served in many different infantry regiments. These included the 2nd, 11th, 12th, 16th, 21st, and 28th Infantry Regiments. He also commanded some of these units. His leadership skills were recognized. In September 1916, he was promoted to Brigadier General.

During World War I, General French continued his service. He was stationed at Camp Jackson. This camp was located in Columbia, South Carolina. In 1917, he traveled to Europe. There, he inspected American and Allied forces in France. This was an important role during the war.

General French retired from the army in January 1920. He had served his country for over four decades. He passed away on March 10, 1921. He died at Walter Reed Hospital. This hospital is in Washington, District of Columbia. Francis Henry French was buried with honors. His final resting place is Arlington National Cemetery.
