Francis I (also known as Fransez I in Breton and François I in French) was an important ruler in the 15th century. He was born on May 11, 1414, in Vannes. Francis became the Duke of Brittany and Count of Montfort on August 29, 1442. He held these titles until his death on July 17, 1450. His father was John V, Duke of Brittany, and his mother was Joan of France. Joan was the daughter of King Charles VI of France.

Francis's Family Life

Francis I was first planned to marry Bonne of Savoy. She was the daughter of Amadeus VIII, Duke of Savoy. Sadly, Bonne passed away in 1430 at age 15, just before their wedding.

First Marriage

Francis I's first marriage was to Yolande of Anjou. She was the daughter of Louis II, Duke of Anjou. They were married in Nantes in August 1431. Francis and Yolande had one son named Renaud, who was the Count of Montfort. Sadly, Renaud died when he was very young. Yolande, Francis's first wife, passed away in 1440.

Second Marriage

Francis then married Isabel of Scotland. Isabel was the daughter of King James I of Scots. They were married at the Château d'Auray on October 30, 1442. Francis and Isabel had two daughters:

Becoming Duke of Brittany

Francis I became the Duke of Brittany after his father, John V, passed away. He ruled for about eight years. During his time as duke, he lived in several grand castles. These included the Château de l'Hermine, the Château de Nantes, the Château de Clisson, and the Château de Suscinio. These castles were important homes for the Dukes of Brittany.

His Succession

Francis I died on July 17, 1450, at the Château de l'Hermine. He was only 36 years old. Because he did not have any sons who lived to adulthood, his younger brother became the next Duke. His brother, Peter II of Brittany, took over as duke after Francis's death.
