Francis Rapp (born June 27, 1926 – died March 29, 2020) was a French historian. He was an expert in the Middle Ages, especially the history of the Alsace region in France and medieval Germany. He was a university professor who had retired but was still highly respected (an emeritus professor). Since 1993, he was also a member of a very important French academic group called the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres.

Early Life and Scouting
Francis Rapp was born in Strasbourg, France. His father, Léon Rapp, was a lawyer. Francis grew up in a family that was both Catholic and very proud of their country. He went to high school at the Jean Sturm Gymnasium.
During his youth, he was involved in scouting with the Scouts de France. At one point, during a difficult time, he joined a secret scouting group. This group met with about twenty young people at the Mont Sainte-Odile starting in December 1942. Later, in the late 1960s, he joined another scouting group called the Association des Guides et Scouts d'Europe. He even became the commissioner for the Alsace Province in this group until the mid-1980s.
His Studies and Teaching Career
Francis Rapp was a brilliant student. In 1952, he earned a top degree in history called the agrégation d'histoire. After that, he taught at the Lycée Fustel-de-Coulanges de Strasbourg for a year.
He then worked as a resident at the Fondation Dosne-Thiers from 1956 to 1961. From 1961 to 1972, he was a lecturer at the University of Nancy. After that, he became an assistant professor of medieval history at the Marc Bloch University of Strasbourg.
In 1972, he earned his Doctor of Letters degree. He then became a lecturer and later a full professor at the University of Strasbourg starting in 1974.
Besides his main university roles, Francis Rapp also taught the history of Christianity at the Faculté de théologie protestante de Strasbourg from 1972 to 1991. He was also a visiting professor at the university of Neuchâtel and taught at several universities in North America and Europe.
Important Academic Roles
Francis Rapp was a member of many important committees and councils. These included the Consultative Committee of Universities and the Higher Council of University Bodies. He was also part of the National Committee of the Centre national de la recherche scientifique, which is a major research organization in France.
He served on the Scientific Council and the Board of Directors for the École nationale des chartes and the École française de Rome. These are highly respected institutions for historical studies.
He was also a member of several academies, including the Académie des sciences, lettres et arts d'Alsace
