During the Napoleonic Wars, he showed his support for his country. He helped create a group of volunteer cavalry soldiers in Oxford. He was made their Captain in 1803. After the wars ended, these local volunteer groups joined together. Spencer, now Lord Churchill, became a Lieutenant-Colonel in this new group. It was called the North Western Oxfordshire Regiment of Yeomanry.
