A Life of Service

Early Life and Family

Francis Talbot was born in 1500 at Sheffield Castle. His parents were George Talbot, 4th Earl of Shrewsbury and Anne Hastings. His grandparents were also important noble figures.

Taking on Responsibilities

When his father passed away in 1538, Francis took over his titles and duties. He also became the Chamberlain of the Exchequer for life. This was a very important job in the government.

A Powerful Leader in the North

Even though he was a Roman Catholic, Francis Talbot remained loyal to King Henry VIII. He even received some lands when the monasteries were closed down. In 1545, he was made a Knight of the Garter.

Francis Talbot was a very powerful person in the northern part of England. He didn't get involved much in politics in London. However, he played a big part in the invasion of Scotland. This led to the Battle of Pinkie in 1547. After this, he became the president of the Council of the North in 1549.

Loyalty to the Crown

During the reign of King Edward VI, Francis Talbot followed the new Protestant religion. But many knew he still preferred the Catholic faith. He was a member of the King's Council. Some people worried he might support Mary I instead of Lady Jane Grey.

When Lady Jane Grey was announced as Queen, Francis Talbot did not openly oppose it. But he worked behind the scenes to help the council recognize Mary I as the rightful Queen. He was one of the first to openly support her. Queen Mary rewarded him by giving him a place on her own Council.

His Family

Francis Talbot married Mary Dacre (1502–1538) on November 30, 1523. They had three children together:

  • George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury (1528–1590)
  • Anne Talbot, Baroness Bray, Baroness Wharton (around 1524 – February 3, 1585). She married two times.
  • Thomas Talbot (who died young, before his father, and had no children)

Later, Francis Talbot married a second time to Grace Shakerley (died 1560). They had one son:

  • Sir John Talbot (born 1541 in Grafton, England)
